Pakistan suicide blast injures four |
Islamabad (PTI): A suicide bomber blew himself up at the venue of a religious conference in Pakistan's restive North West Frontier Province, injuring at least four people.
Local police officials said all the explosives wrapped around the bomber's body did not go off, thus limiting the damage caused by the blast in the Dera Ismail Khan district of the province.
The bomber struck as participants were leaving the conference organised by the Shia community at Bannu Chowk in memory of people who died in recent sectarian clashes.
District police chief Abdul Gaffar Kesrani told Dawn News channel that a bomb disposal squad had been called in to defuse the explosives attached to the suicide attacker's body.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack, the latest in a fresh string of suicide bombings in Pakistan. However, the local Taliban and groups affiliated to it have been known to target the minority Shia community.
Pakistan witnessed nearly 70 suicide bombings last year that killed hundreds of people, most of them security personnel. The attacks stopped after the new civilian government said it would hold talks with tribal elders to usher in peace in the troubled northwestern tribal belt.
However, a fresh wave of suicide attacks began after the government launched an operation against militants in the tribal areas last month.
