Thermal Matrix Capabilities

Thermal Matrix prides itself on being a leader in the concealed object detection industry. Our engineering staff are well positioned to provide rapid prototyping of just about any type of electronic, mechanical, electro-optical or sensor related product. Our team is comprised of the best and brightest hardware and software engineers, with over fifty years of hands-on design and development experience working in both the private sector and for government agencies.

Thermal Matrix has on-staff Management, Subject Matter Experts and Engineers fluent in the field of image processing and image/machine vision hardware and software with a combined experience in excess of 50 years. Thermal Matrix staff members have personally designed and delivered high speed, power efficient machine vision and image processing hardware capable of operating at or in excess of military requirements. Products include the Phoenix and Spectrum machine vision products capable of target acquisition, tracking and full frame analysis at sustained rates exceeding 100 images per second. Thermal Matrix staff members have authored numerous founding computer software algorithms for machine vision analysis such as symmetry inspection and sub-pixel gauging. Thermal Matrix staff members have authored over a dozen Patents in the field of image/vision processing algorithms and IR/millimeter wave imaging systems.

Thermal Matrix has a comprehensive, fully developed and first-hand understanding of the technical and operational issues associated with both military and industrial applications. Thermal Matrix has supplied optics, imaging sensors, image/vision hardware and software as well as complete imaging solutions and vision system deployments. Thermal Matrix has a long history of working with and for government agencies on major projects, and has specifically interfaced with DHS, NVESD, JIEDDO, PNNL and Ft. Belvoir.

Thermal Matrix has vast experience supplying mission-capable, soldier-deployable imaging and sensor platforms to the US Military, such as Thermal Matrix’s TM-1. The TM-1 concealed weapons detection system employs a suite of advanced imaging sensors (low light, infra red, millimeter wave, visible, etc.) in a “system of systems” solution for providing concealed weapons and IED detection from standoff distances.

Thermal Matrix has additionally completed the development and introduction of the ACT system, a one-man portable ( ‹ 15 lbs) concealed weapon detection system that fits in a soldier’s rucksack, deploys in minutes and requires no infrastructure. The ACT system has undergone field trials by JIEDDO and is currently being adopted by law enforcement agencies around the world to provide the security screening wherever it is needed most. The ACT system uses cutting-edge image processing algorithms to detect and highlight concealed objects in real time on the soldier’s touch-screen “Tough Book” computer.

Thermal Matrix routinely demonstrates in our products and day-to-day operations the application of management techniques and controls, personnel and facilities which provide a high level of confidence to ensure successful performance.

Thermal Matrix employs and has developed world-class management techniques to implement and manage its image/vision projects and daily operations. Thermal Matrix’s executive staff, including TM’s Executive Director, Engineering Manager and in-house Subject Matter Expert, has extensive experience in upper management (Presidents and Directors) of successful image processing and machine vision firms before joining Thermal Matrix. Relevant management experience includes President and Founder of Advanced Technologies (a 17-year machine vision firm), Director of Varityper (involved with lasers and optics), Manager of Video Tek (a machine vision firm), and Senior Director of Brijot Imaging (a millimeter wave concealed object detection firm).

Management’s expansive and diverse experience and proven successful history in the field is a clear indicator of Thermal Matrix’s ability to successfully manage these styles of projects. Additionally, TM management staff have a thorough understanding of the PMBOK (Product Management Body of Knowledge).

Thermal Matrix employs the ability to attract and retain an enviable selection of highly qualified and experienced personnel of the caliber and background necessary for undertaking and successfully completing the project.

Thermal Matrix staff have extensive background and experience including design and implementation of multiple generations of array image processors, bit-slice processors, pixel engines and RISC/ASIC based imaging processing engines. This design experience tightly and efficiently integrates image processing hardware and software into advanced, flexible, power efficient, very fast video and vision processors, leveraging Thermal Matrix’s decades of experience with the latest hardware and software techniques.

Thermal Matrix utilizes experienced software developers and tools to design, model and prototype hardware and software systems. Thermal Matrix has in the past designed and developed tightly-integrated hardware/software image processing engines including advanced Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC) techniques with image processing acceleration performed in hardware via Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). Thermal Matrix staff are Subject Matter Experts at this level of image processing engine design for both hardware and software, including advanced techniques such as parallel and pipelined pixel processing. By way of example, the photo below pictures the Spectrum vision engine utilizing RISC processing and up to 6 ASICs. The vision engine incorporates eleven 1K x 1K frame buffers and hardware accelerated pixel processing. Spectrum’s extreme level of hardware/software integration, power efficient design, high resolution imaging and high speed processing (100+ frames per second) lay an excellent background and framework for any task at hand.
